FIST CITY reviewed in the Brooklyn Rail!

Our last exhibition, Fist City, has been written up in the Brooklyn Rail!

James Kalm writes: “A stop at Fist City at the Fowler Arts Collective was like entering a time machine telescoping the last century. Located in a massive, crumbling hulk of a warehouse on northern Greenpoint’s East River waterfront, the Fowler Collective is a several-thousand-square-foot space housing a number of studio cubicles and a gallery. Arriving after dark on an overcast spring evening, I rode half a block through an enclosed alleyway to enter. In the film noir gloom, I halfway expected to see WWII sailors nuzzling floozies in the shadows, or petty gangsters unloading illegal hooch for downtown speakeasies. After climbing stairs to a suspended walkway, I entered the ruggedly constructed exhibition rooms and smelled cut-pine studs, sheetrock dust, and latex paint. Suddenly I was transported into Williamsburg 1982. But the works on display, mostly medium to smallish paintings and works on paper, were totally contemporary.”  :)

He goes on to review the work of each of the artists who were FIST CITY: Nathlie Provosty, Matt Phillips, EJ Hauser, and Logan Grider. Rock on, Fist City!!

Opening Reception for FIST CITY! Sat, April 23rd from 6-9pm

Fowler Arts Collective is pleased to present Fist City, an exhibition of abstract paintings by EJ Hauser, Logan Grider, Matt Phillips, and Nathlie Provosty.

A fist is the hand’s best attempt to organize itself. More often than not, our attempts to create order and meaning only remind us of how lawless and mysterious life actually is. What does the inside of your closed hand even look like? Fist City is not just a place; it is a community and a credo. Hands reaching out to grasp, touch, and configure the entropic. When words become too elusive and you have to take matters directly into your hands, you have entered Fist City.

Titled after the infamous Loretta Lynn song of the same name, Fist City embodies the bold, take-notice attitude of Lynn’s lyrics. The four artists in Fist City are engaged in a rigorous investigation of abstraction and all the different forms it can take. The exhibition is a collaboration between the artists: self-directed and independently organized with the support of Fowler Arts Collective. In addition to paintings, the artists have produced a limited edition broadsheet that will accompany the exhibition. The artists live and work primarily in New York City and Philadelphia.

Please join us for Fist City’s opening reception on Saturday, April 23rd from 6-9 pm. The exhibition will be on view from April 23rd to May 7th. During the exhibition, Fowler will have open gallery hours on Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm to 6pm. During other times, the exhibition can be viewed by appointment.

Fowler is a new gallery and studio collective located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Fowler is located in the Greenpoint Terminal Warehouse complex at 67 West Street between Greenpoint Ave. and Noble St. Look for signs directing you into the second floor space.
