Fowler Nation: James Vanderberg

James Vanderberg is a talented painter and active member of the Fowler community. Read on for James’ bio and for some exciting news!

- James Vanderberg was born on Long Island, New York.  James received his MFA from CUNY Hunter College working with color and abstract painting.  While there, James was awarded a Luetz/Riedel Fellowship to study for one semester at École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts in Paris, France.  There, James immersed himself in the study of Monet’s Les Nympheas.  After graduating from Hunter, James was honored with a Tony Smith Foundation Award.  He presently lives and works in Brooklyn and teaches undergraduate art at Fordham University’s Rose Hill Campus in the Bronx, New York.  He is the guest curator for Fordham University at Lincoln Center’s Alumni Exhibitions.

- James Vanderberg recently collaborated with his brother, Peter Vanderberg, on an art book to be released this July. Weather-Eye is a book of poems, drawings and paintings by two brothers from Long Island.  James (the artist) and Peter (the poet) grew up on the south shore, spending their summers exploring the waters and beaches of the Great South Bay.  After many travels, education and varied pursuits, they have both returned to their native shores with renewed interest in this place and the personal resonance it holds for them.  Check out http://weather-eye-book.blogspot.com/ for news and events this summer.

Fowler Nation: Hannah Lamar Simmons

Hannah Lamar Simmons is an installation artist working with paper as a sculptural medium, video projection, and interactive media. She is a newer addition to the Fowler flock and is already an active and inspiring part of our studio family. Having only recently moved to New York City, Hannah is taking the city by storm! Read on for more about Hannah’s work and upcoming exhibitions.

Hannah Lamar Simmons has her first solo show opening July 8th at the Carrboro Arts Center in Carrboro, NC. The show will feature an installation in newspaper:  Hannah meticulously cuts entire story lines from a local newspaper issue and glues them in linear trails onto the walls of the exhibition space, thus creating a topography. Viewers must stand up against and physically follow the story map in order to “read” the piece. Watch a video documenting the making of one of these pieces: http://vimeo.com/17708231

- Later this Summer, Hannah will continue her collaboration with Australian artist Rebecca Kinsey - together they are paperJAM. Check out their website for images from their most recent installation, Under Construction. While on exhibit at No Longer Empty’s About Face, painter Giorgio Casu was inspired to use the space in promotion of his design featured on playwatch’s most recent watchface edition. PaperJAM collaborated with Giorgio, designer Michele Palazzo, and producer Carlo Vittuci to create animations which can be viewed here:

- Under Construction was awarded the single open call spot offered in the Lower East Side’s No Longer Empty’s exhibition About Face which opened in conjunction with the New Museum’s Festival of Ideas for the New City (May 2011).

Fowler has been hibernating during this never-ending stormy winter, but we have started planning some exciting exhibitions for the Spring and Summer!

Scott Chasse and Thomas Buildmore will be curating (and participating in) an exhibition, Paint it Now, that will completely transform the Fowler Gallery. The artists will paint directly onto the walls and cover every surface with high contrast black and white images. Stay tuned for the growing list of artists on our website here.

Paint it Now will run from early May to July 2011 (exact dates TBD). We will be coordinating with the Northside Festival too, so expect an amazing exhibition party and lots of good times for Greenpoint and Williamsburg, June 16th to 19th, 2011.
